Hi Harry,  Alan Kearling is picking up the trailer prior to the rally and will bring it out to site early Sunday morning.  If he is unable to do that, could you possibly be the standby driver?  Thx

I had a new parking pad made on the side of my house which could hold the trailer prior to the rally.  I live on the west edge of town so easy egress.  Not sure how the batteries are but if needed we could plug the trailer in a day or two before the rally.  Same with prepping the trailer that could be done at my place.

    Registration Now Available!

The Rallywest Kananaskis Rally volunteer registration webpage is now available. Here is the information you will need to sign up as a radio operator for this event.

If you follow this url it will take you to the main RallyWest page:

    https://www.rallywest.com/

From there click on "Events" in the upper left of the page and you will be taken to a set of images for upcoming RallyWest events. Click on the picture for the Kananaskis Rally to get to the rally information page. Here is a shortcut:

    http://www.cscc.ab.ca/kananaskis/

Click where it says Volunteer at the top of the page. This will take you down the page to the Volunteer Information section. Here is a final shortcut:

    http://www.cscc.ab.ca/kananaskis/#volunteer

Scroll down and look for the blue Signup Here button beside the words Volunteer Registration Form. Clicking on this link will take you to the registration page with the title Kananaskis Rally Volunteer Signup. Each time you click on that registration link the system gives you a unique tag, so I can't give you a shortcut here. If you bookmark the link you get after this point, with that unique tag in the url, you'll be able to go back to your registration record and make updates later. Note that clicking on this link more than once also means that you are signing up more than once!

If you are considering coming to volunteer as a radio operator, then please complete the signup page. If you're not sure you can make it, then indicate in the Comments text box that you are "tentative" for now, but please do sign up. If I have no registration information for you, then it's difficult to assign a role or to contact you if there are urgent changes.

When indicating the radio equipment that you plan to bring to the rally, try to be as generic as possible. It's much easier to deal with "50 watt mobile radio with APRS and a quarter wave magnetic mount antenna" than a bunch of make/model numbers with which I may not be familiar.

Finally, please double check that the email address and phone number(s) that you enter on the registration form are correct. Messages that bounce back at me are not getting to you! It's also important to have valid contact information, should a problem occur at, or just prior to, the event.

To accommodate feedback that I have received, I will try to keep the number of mass emails to a minimum. I will usually post material here in the CARA General Forum where everyone can find it at their own discretion.  That means it is up to you to check here regularly so that you have the latest information. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

I hope you'll be joining us for a great time at the Kananaskis Rally!

Rally organizers have requested CARA's comm trailer be set up and ready to run at this year's Kananaskis Rally.

We have a driver already in place to tow the trailer out there.  But, in the event our main driver suddenly becomes unavailable, we need a list of standby drivers who can fetch the unit from its storage place east of Calgary, bring it early to its deployment site at the rally site west of Calgary near the north end of the Powderface Trail, and then take it back to storage at the conclusion of the event.  The way it usually works best, is to pick up the trailer a day or two before, and then take it back sometime in the next day or two.  The trailer weighs around 2800 lbs, requires a 2" tow hitch ball, and has electric brakes.  A remote control RF brake controller is used by the tow vehicle driver to control the trailer's brake system.  The comm trailer should be delivered to its deployment site by 06:30 at the latest.  The deployment site is likely the Visitor Centre in the Jumpingpound Demonstration Forest on the Sibbald Creek Trail, Hwy 68, west of Calgary.  I will confirm that as soon as I can.  Anyone with a suitable tow vehicle who wants to be on the standby list should contact VA6RPL Peter LaGrandeur, event captain for the comm trailer at VA6RPL@techworld.ca or (403) 969-7411.

In addition, we need a team of radio people who can assist in the setup of the trailer early in the morning, and then pack it up at the end of the day.  This is a great way to get to learn how the comm trailer works.  Anyone who would like to participate on the comm trailer deployment team should contact VA6RPL Peter LaGrandeur, event captain for the comm trailer at VA6RPL@techworld.ca or (403) 969-7411.  And if there is someone who could bring out the club's coffee machine and have coffee perked and ready for the comm trailer team at its deployment site at 06:30, please let me know.  I've requested budget money for this from the rally organizers.  We will set up the coffee station on the table in our nice new all-weather tent, next to the comm trailer.

Stay tuned for updates on the comm trailer deployment.

Radio Operations at Rallysport Events '101'

I keep getting good feedback on this item, so let's keep doing it!

To ensure that our radio operators are comfortable with common rally terminology, I ask that everyone take a few minutes to review the '101' document, linked below.

This '101' document is intended to provide rally radio operators with a foundational understanding of what happens at a rally, who is involved, and where to find more information. Key terms are explained, roles are described, other references are listed, and some important practices are presented. Much of this material has been extracted from the pre-op briefing slides, so this helps to make our briefings briefer!

Please take the time to download a copy (link below) and read it prior to the pre-op briefing (date to be announced). While this guide is oriented at people who have had little exposure to rally events, experienced operators may also benefit from a refresher. In any case, the briefing will assume that everyone is fully familiar with the contents of this guide. While specific questions about the '101' material will be addressed, we will not be presenting these basics during the pre-op briefings.

    Packing and Preparation Guide

As always, here is the packing and preparation guide for radio operators planning to be part of the Kananaskis Rally. Be sure to download a copy and review it so that you have your kit ready to go for the event.

Keep checking this forum regularly. As the event approaches, there will be other materials and information posted here that you'll want to review.

    Date Correction!

There was some confusion about the date of the rally, so please review this carefully to ensure that you have the most current information. The Rallywest website is incorrect (as of the date of this posting) and disagrees with information available on Facebook. I checked with the organizers today, and have been told that the correct date for the Kananaskis Rally is:

    Sunday 27 October 2019

Be sure to check your calendar, as October is turning out to be a busy month for our club this year!

Kananaskis Rally - Save the Date!!!

I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer weather. Seeing how cool and wet the season has been this year, I hope we get a few weeks of warmth before those chilling autumn winds return!

Since we're on the subject of autumn, here's a heads-up for your calendars:

The Kananaskis Rally is planned for Sunday, 03 November. As far as I know, we'll be back in the Jumping Pound / Powderface area of Kananaskis Country, West of Calgary. Details will be posted in this forum as information comes available. For now, mark the rally date in your calendar and we'll see everyone in September.

    73,
    Garry, VE6GDS
