    George VE6JZZ has given us a spread sheet template so that we can make a unbiased comparison of availabe field day radios. This has been shared with the field day group.

    The spread sheet included WANTS and NEEDS.  We will be adding anothe field for features that would add value as well.  eg detachable face plate, number of antenna ports, accessory ports, built in tuners etc.

    Hi Harry.  The wall space won't be wasted.  There is plenty of room to have TWO display faces and radio bodies at each operator station.  That layout has already been done to scale already.  The method shown below works very well, and the HF radio operator needs easy access to the HF radio body to attach / detach the two coax cables from the mast; and to run the data patch cords from the radio body to the laptop(s).  And, there will not be power wires cluttering up the wall space.  We have a new power wire management system that declutters.  As well, the large 27" monitors don't need to be dismounted and remounted on a regular basis; soon enough that will cause damage, and most people have their own large monitors at home anyway.  Any large monitors for the trailer should be permanently mounted.  By the way, we are in the process of mounting a permanent "A-B" speaker at each radio station in there.  The operator can flip a switch and choose between the audio going to the speaker or to a headset.  All under control.

    Just to put things in perspective.

    CARA purchased two TS-2000x transceivers in 2012,  7 years ago. they were originally  purchased for an IRB project at the time. One of the resulting packages was deployed at a members QTH for a number of years.  The other was available to anyone with Antenna internet and power they wished to share.  One or both packages have been used for field day and special events.

    Times change.  When the comm trailer was put together, both packages were assigened to it to provide HF through 1200meg capability.  As the trailer began to get more use for public service events the space needed by the transceiver fully packaged proved to be problematic.  Temporary VHF/UHF installs were more practical for the events.

    One of the portable packages was disassembled and used at the Club station giving VE6AO a remote available for 50 144 440 1200 Meg bands SSB and FM.


     I would say we have had a good run with the TS-2000x.  


    It is time to get an HF transceiver that is packaged as part of the COMM trailer.  The “surplus” TS-2000 would still be available for second Field day station and a backup for VE6AO.

    Replacing the current HF radio means taking a $2000 asset the club bought and spending more money to replace it.  What do we do with the old radio? Flea Market to pay for the new radio?

    The watch word for a new HF radio for the comm trailer is "small".  Small and light, but still full featured.  That's why the massive and cumbersome Kenwood TS-2000X package is not suitable for the comm trailer.  I'm suggesting a space-saving permanent mount model, with a removable display head, that can be mounted on the wall  in front of the front operator table, along with its radio main body.  An example of a full featured HF radio, with full Morse capability, that meets those parameters is the Kenwood TS-480SAT.  Any other suggestions?  The JPG shows a wall mounted VHF/UHF radio, but the mounting style would be the same for the TS-480SAT HF radio.
