Want a jump start on Field Day which is later in June?  Here's chance to look at the CARA communication trailer ahead of time -

On Friday morning, after 09:00, I will be monitoring VE6RYC as I prepare to take the communications trailer out to the proposed new HF site by DeWinton.   http://www.caraham.org/event-2930125

For those who want to see where the trailer is stored, and how it is hooked up to a vehicle, if properly equipped, I can do a demonstration.  Included in the demo will be how to use the MANDATORY electric trailer brakes on the trailer.

If anyone cannot make it out to the HF site over the weekend, I can do a quick orientation on the trailer at the storage place before towing it away.

Those interested can meet me at the Calgary West Campground office at 09:00 this Friday morning. Address:  221 101 St SW, Calgary

If you are a bit late, call me on VE6RYC, and I can let you in at the locked storage gate which is 200 metres south of the campground office on 101 Street SW.

Don't forget to review the trailer user manual "Technical Reference Manual" which is posted on-line on the CARA web site. http://www.caraham.org/Communications-Trailer-Tech-Ref-Manual

Are you an amateur radio operator but not a member of the Calgary Amateur Radio Club (CARA) yet?  It not necessary to be a member of CARA to come see the trailer or be a participant at the HF site over the weekend.

Any other questions or comments, post them here, or contact me at VA6RPL@techworld.ca .

The following information is courtesy of the American Radio Relay League

ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 40,000 Radio Amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations.

Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practise for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN! It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles.

While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practise their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar.

The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditions. We use these same skills when we help with events such as marathons and bike-a-thons; fundraisers such as walk-a-thons; celebrations such as parades; and exhibits at fairs, malls and museums – these are all large, preplanned, non-emergency activities.

But despite the development of very complex, modern communications systems – or maybe because they ARE so complex – Amateur Radio has been called into action again and again to provide communications in crises when it really matters. Radio Amateurs are well known for our communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations.

Contact your municipality for support, your news crews to drop by for important coverage to help raise the Amateur Radio profile within the community, and invite your government leaders to drop by your site.

Don't forget to share your Field Day stories with us! We would love to hear about your Field Day activities and would be happy to consider them for publication in The Canadian Amateur magazine. Please send them to us by using our online "Members Stories" form or by sending it directly to tcamag@yahoo.ca.
