New Member, old Radio Shack HTX-202 handheld.

    A final update.  I tested the charging on the new Batteries.  They charge just fine.  I do not know what the store was talking about by the description of a burned out diode.

    I am now up and running.

    I have read that on early models there is an issue with such a diode. I understand that transmitting while charging can lead to certain component failures. Perhaps that is related to the fault you are experiencing.

    I took the battery pack to Battery World. They replaced the batteries for $29 (reasonable price I think) but they said that a diode had failed and that the charger connection does not work.  I am verifying what they said and potentially fixing it.  This is a test of my basic electronic skills.

    The HTX-202 battery packs and Icom IC-2GAT VHF handheld packs are interchangable. Icom supplied packs that you can refill with 6 AA batteries. As far as the local battery company, I have only met them at a flea market but they seemed honest and knowledgable. I still have my 2GAT kicking around but sold off ,my HTX-404 (UHF version of yours) as while back.

    It's likely best to chat with people directly at one of the meetings about a question such as this. I think you'll get better information that way.

    Regardless, I recently acquired one of those same radios. What a fun piece of vintage equipment to play with! So, I would be interested to know what solution you come up with.

    I am a newly signed up member and have yet to make it to a meeting, but I have a question.

    I wanted to get started talking on 2 meter and have an old Radio Shack HTX-202 that I used to use 30 years ago.  Google says that this is a workhorse, so I was thinking of reviving it. 

    Where in Calgary might a person go to purchase replacement batteries?

    Inside the case, there is a 6 pack of Nickel-Cadmium batteries, 7.2v 600mAh.  There are 4 wires 2 attached to screws on the bottom.  I am thinking that these may be for charging, but the wiring is not obvious. 

    In any case, I called Battery World, and they claim to be able to "make one up".  Do I trust them or is this something that I should order on line?

    Thanks for any advice.
