Follow-up from Pre-Op Briefing
Thanks to everyone who came out for last night's Pre-Op briefing. Here are a few points and questions that were discussed.
1) Since both cars and blockers are referred to by number, be clear about which you mean. Say "Blocker 7" or "Car 7", not just "Seven".
2) Rally Control would like us to call in when the "zero cars" (0, 00, and 000) pass our locations. This helps them confirm what the RallySafe system is telling them.
3) When you have some spare time, give the temporary repeater a try. (VE6RNQ, 146.640- T110.9). Let me know how well it works for you.
4) Request changes between standard and tactical callsigns when you're entering / leaving the venue.
5) Blockers, Spectator operators, and Control Point operators - please remain on your location after the last stage until Rally Control approves your departure.
6) Please check in and check out with Radio Marshall and/or Rally Control. We'd like to know when you're on the way and we want to be sure that no one gets left behind on a course road. For your own safety, try to use one of the supported approach / departure routes.
7) Review the RED FLAG procedure. Remember, any operator can call RED FLAG if there is a serious safety critical incident that requires priority treatment on the channel.
8) Review the checklists in the Event Book. Be sure that you have considered all of the relevant checklist items at the appropriate times.
9) Consider how your station looks to oncoming rally cars. Be sure that your "STOP" sign is not showing to cars when it is not supposed to be. Also, avoid having your headlights shining into rally car traffic, as this can look to them like an oncoming vehicle.
10) Watch for common radio configuration / operation errors. You won't likely need CT squelch on the repeaters. So, it's best to just not use this feature, as it can lead to communication problems. You will need an "encode" tone to activate the VE6RYC repeater though. Finally, please don't jam the repeater by sitting on your microphone!
Most of all have a really fun day doing portable / mobile operations in the mountains and stay safe!

Garry (VE6GDS)
