VE6AZX - AllStar Node 43378, Possible to Link to Repeater?

    Well, looks like REC doesn't pass ctcss tones through, though I thought that it did. 

    At this point I have two options - either configure a repeater to do that, or, move the node somewhere high up. 

    Is it possible to co-locate a simplex radio near a repeater, or is de-sense a problem with that?

    It is  a little used repeater. 
    We could start to use it for an informal net to discuss your project and see how it performs in its present location.

    Instead of making the request on this forum (don't know who is monitoring here from the executive aside from Rob (Admin). I suggest you consult one of the Key Klix issues, go to the back page and get the contact details for the executive and/or VHF technical committee and drop them a line. You're more likely to get a response that way.

    The device could probably be used with an Alinco transceiver on 1.25m. The only problem is that it needs carrier-on-squelch, mic, discriminator output, and audio input taps on the radio. Whether this would be simple to accomplish depends on the specific model. Right now I have it attached to a cheap kenwood TM-281a and have the wires for those soldered directly to the main board. 

    Would it be possible to instead use my radio, perhaps on 75cm where there's more bandwidth? It could be unplugged and turned off when the antenna needs to be used for contesting.

    Good to see the discussion. Just back from a road trip. ROB VE6CCL

     With the number of repeater pares already established in Calgary on 2 meter I  wonder if this mode might work out using simplex frequency in the 220 meg band. There are still a few people with 1.25 meter equipment and the band is under used.  

    Would this work using an Alinco transever ?  

    We could probable get the use of one that is connected to a good antenna at 90 feet when not being used in VHF contests.  Sit also has internet access

    I'm leaving this here as a last request for information and for future reference if anyone wants to try something similar. 

    A much easier way to do what I'm looking to accomplish was suggested by a fellow named Andrew Webb, who contacted me by email. 

    If the remote repeater uses a tone in and a tone out, but does NOT transmit PL on ID, then it works fine with remote simplex IRLP / allstar / anything nodes. 

    He mentioned that commercial motorola repeaters have this property, VE6RPT, was an example. 

    Does anyone know of any repeaters in the CARA circle that have this property?

    I did some more research, and it looks like my original idea would require some modification to an existing repeater in order to work.

    If my simplex node opens its squelch on the repeater transmit (with ctcss or otherwise), then hangtime and courtesy tones will make it in to the internet link. The people running the network don't want this. 

    The only way to truly make this work would be to find a repeater that passes ctcss tones through itself - i.e. it doesn't have a tone, but would re-transmit any tone it receives. I went looking around and didn't find any in calgary that did this, which makes me suspect that most repeaters filter out and re-synthesize PL tones rather than passing them through. 

    Any ideas on how I could increase the range of my node would be appreciated. I considered moving it up higher, but I don't know if (as a group) we have access to such a location.

    Some of the nodes are linked to IRLP nodes. I originally wanted to set up an IRLP node but went to AllStar because it was open source.
