Training and Certification for Amateur Radio

CARA's course for Basic Qualification

We will be holding the Basic classes this fall, starting on Sept 13, 2026, and running every Sunday afternoon till Dec 13 (except for Thanksgiving Oct 11).

Registration opens in the summer.

We will be using the training guide, the Canadian Amateur Radio Basic Qualification Study Guide.

  • We have a quantity of these books, to loan to the students for the duration of the course.
  • You may also purchase your own from GPS Central in Calgary.

Practice Exams

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada has provided us with the opportunity to practice the exam as many times as we want, prior to writing it with an examiner. Aim for 70% or above to pass Basic and 80% or above to achieve Basic with Honours.

Study Guides

The Coax Publications Canadian Amateur Radio Basic Qualification Study Guide includes all information required to pass the current ISED’s exam. The new 4th printing was reprinted and updated for the 2021 study season. 

Coax Publications Advanced Study Guide

Coax Publications also publishes the Canadian Amateur Radio Advanced Qualification Study Guide (2nd Edition, 2nd Printing). Written to the same high standards as the Basic Study Guide, this book covers all questions in the Industry Canada Advanced Qualification question bank while providing needed context.
