Well after all that it was just crappy timing (the new ext kit) and the MIC.

At some point when moving the radio out to the truck and hooking up the YSK-857 kit the MH-31 mic decided to "take a powder" that's a technical term there kids .....  So now I have a shiny new MH-59 A8J mic to replace the broken 31 and watch this video to fix the dead mic.

Thanks to Vince for letting me borrow his working mic to confirm that mine was dead and to the other guys who offered up suggestions.

    Cheers'

    Dave,

You can use the Yaesu MH-31 cable found on many other Yaesu radios not just the FT-857. That microphone is stock for the FT 817, FT-857, FT-897 and even the FT-450/450D. Or, if you know someone who has the MD-100, MD-200 deskmike....those can also be used in the FT-857 radio (for testing purposes).

    And there may be others....

    Hi Guys !

Thanks tons for the replies ......

Tino:  yep, I'm crossing the fingies and saying a mild prayer that is is just a mic issue, and yep, I've since plugged and unplugged the mic (on both ends) a few times now and no joy.  I've also used the cable that came with the kit of course and still my audio is MIA.

Jim:   I watched the vid and he solves it in the first ten minutes of the vid and it IS his mic so I'm hoping after I can try another working one I can just try his repairs he does later in the video on that stock mic.

Jerry, I hope it's just the mic, but it really would be a case of odd timing because I've had the radio in and out of the the Xterra a few times and never a problem till got the extension kit.  If is it just a mic issue I'll count myself lucky .....

Once I can find or borrow an MH-31 mic from someone for 10 mins, we'll see.  I have a nasty suspicion that it's something in the front end and thus unless I can find a YouTube walk-thru for this exact problem I have a feeling it's off to Yaesu ..... which will suck on ice becasue I was talking to someone on QRZ and they said it was a similar problem and the repair was a new board that was only $600 USD .... Yeeeek!

So, if you know anyone around Calgary with an 857 I can try my mic on, I'll buy lunch and the beers ..... (grin)

    Cheers'

I've been doing some playing and if I use the YT-100 to tune the radio like I usually do.  It shows output on everything: POWER, ALC, MOD, ETC.  Odd huh?  It's like the mic is dead but can trigger the Tx. but there is no audio.

Part 2, I also hooked up the radio to its Signalink and PC and tried PSK31 and again, when I send a call on 14.070 it again shows signal on everything !

So, I'm stumped, if anyone has any suggestions - feel free to offer them up and yes, I did factory reset the radio and still no joy.

Does anyone have an 857D we can try my mic in and visa versa?  I'll come to your location and even buy lunch for the help!

I recently had a similar problem with the Kenwood TS-480HX mounted in my mobile.

When the PTT was activated, the radio would go into transmit everywhere but on SSB voice. I had been using a Heil handi-mic with the transceiver for years, and thought possibly the mic was the problem.

I removed the Heil, replacing it with the stock mic, and everything worked as normal.

Upon disassembling the Heil mic, I found the mic element had a trace on the tiny internal circuit board that had broken free, requiring that the mic element be replaced.

Still, the mic transmitted when the PTT was activated, just not on voice.

    Hope this helps.

Dave - this video is a bit slow to watch but may possibly help.

Seems rather unusual that it was working for you and now (suddenly), it's not. But, I would initially suspect the original handmike cable might have developed a break in the cable. But you can do a test:

First we'll assume that you DID have the (mic) cable plugged in with the connector solidly in the radio (also check the other end that plugs into the microphone to make sure it's fully seated -- unplug and replug if necessary).

Test the mic with it's original cable only plugged into the radio (don't use the extension that came with your YSK kit). Does it work?

If not, then remove the stock cable from the mic and try using the extension cable only that came with your kit....you can use it in place of the original handmike cable directly from the mic to the radio (or you could just use a typical computer CAT5/CAT6 straight thru cable too). Did this work?

If not, then yes you might have a problem with either the microphone or the RJ45 socket in the radio.....I agree having access to another microphone would be very helpful for a quick test...... however at least you have something you can check with the equipment you already have.
